Accessibility

Look at the ways we are making our centre accessible for all our visitors.

Quiet hour

We know it’s not always easy for customers with autism, anxiety, dementia and physical disabilities to shop our centre, which is why we’ve created a quiet hour so that customers who feel more relaxed and more confident in quieter surroundings can thoroughly enjoy their shopping trip with us.

So, what makes our quiet hour different to a normal day in the centre? We'll be turning down the music as well as dimming the lights, plus our staff will be on hand with handy centre guides to make your visit as relaxed as possible.

intu Victoria Centre quiet hours will run on the first Sunday of every month from 11am - 12pm.

Sensory back pack hire

We understand that visiting a shopping centre can be a daunting experience for some of our customers with autism or those with hidden disabilities, so we’ve introduced sensory back packs to help make visiting our centres a more welcoming experience.

What's included in the sensory back pack?

• Ear defenders

• Egg timers

• Fidget toys

• Autism Awareness Guides

• Sunglasses

You may hire sensory bags from our customer service desk and these cost a £20 refundable deposit which you will receive upon returning the bag. For more information please speak to a member of staff at the customer services desk on the lower mall.

Hidden disabilities lanyards, stickers and assistant dog lead sleeves.

For shoppers that require additional assistance when shopping at intu or have hidden disabilities, and wish to identify themselves, we offer a free lanyard or sticker. These lanyards or stickers are available from our customer service desk. Parents and carers can choose between a sticker or lanyard depending on their requirements.

Assistance dogs

Like most public buildings, intu Metrocentre welcomes assistance dogs in the centre. If your dog does not wear a high-vis jacket or harness, it is sometimes difficult for our staff to recognise the difference between assistance dogs and pets, which are not allowed in our centres. To ensure a smooth shopping trip and make it easier for our staff to identify assistance dogs, we recommend you visit our customer information desk to collect a sunflower-design lead sleeve for your dog. This lead sleeve simply slides over your dog’s lead and enables our staff to identify your dog as an assistance dog whilst you are shopping with us. Shoppers are invited to keep this lead sleeve and use it whenever they are in the centre.

Our terms and conditions for assistance dogs are:

Assistance dogs:

• will not wander freely around the premises

• will sit or lie quietly on the floor next to their owner

• are unlikely to foul in a public place

• access to assistance dogs is on a one dog per handler basis

Wheelchair hire

Manual wheelchairs can be hired for free at the customer service desk on the Lower Mall. We will ask you to provide proof of address and to complete a short form. Wheelchair hire is usually for up to 4 hours, but should you need it longer please speak to a member of the team and we will try to accommodate.
