The lure and popularity of Nando's infamous PERi-PERi chicken resulted in a proactive Facebook campaign to bring a restaurant to Stoke-on-Trent. Now, that hope is being turned into reality.
Nando’s Restaurants has signed a lease on 5,500 sq ft of space at the £20 million catering and leisure extension at intu Potteries. Nando’s was the top name specifically requested by people in the public consultation, which gave overwhelming support for the plans. The project is part of intu’s investment of over £1 billion over the next ten years to transform the shopping centre experience.
Peter Atkinson, senior acquisitions manager at Nando’s Restaurants, said: “The Nando’s restaurant at intu Potteries will be a great meeting place for the people of Staffordshire and surrounding areas. The location adds to our wide coverage of the UK and our busy restaurants in Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham.”
Nando’s will join Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Chiquito, PizzaExpress and Frankie & Benny’s together with a 1,100 seat, nine screen Cineworld at the extension to the shopping centre. Construction work has already started on site with opening scheduled for August 2015. A major focus of intu is on working with retailers and operators to provide the right space in the right place to help their business flourish.
Martin Breeden, regional director of intu, said: “Stoke-on-Trent is a rapidly changing area that is underserved by big name restaurants. With Staffordshire University moving 2,500 students to the city, and a catchment for intu Potteries of 850,000, Nando’s will be a buzzing place and a welcomed addition to the range of top brands at the centre.”
