• intu Potteries staff have used over 156 hours last year to volunteer in support of causes close to their heart, showing their commitment to local charities.
The Hub, Fenton is home to a range of activities for the whole community. Its focus is on developing people to become more confident, independent, less socially isolated and widening their social group. Volunteers from intu Potteries have spent several days linking up for the “Great British Spring Clean”. It involved preparing the main activity area at the Hub for the projects it offers by spring cleaning the activity tables and chairs, painting doors and tidying drawers and cupboards. They then tided up the garden and spent time with vulnerable adults.
Larna, administrator at intu Potteries commented: “volunteering at the Hub has opened my eyes to what actually happens around me which I had never taken a second look at before. There is such a warm and exciting feeling when you know you’re spending time making things better for someone you had never met before. It makes me happy to know that I have made a difference. I would volunteer again in a heartbeat”.
Carole Kind is the CIO at The Hub. She added: “we are delighted to have the support of the friendly, willing and capable volunteers from intu Potteries. Their gardening, tidying, maintenance and cleaning, has provided the small team at The Hub with invaluable help. It is amazing that intu as a business has given all employees the opportunity to volunteer for up to 15 hours per year during intu working time especially for a local charity like us that relies on volunteers such as yourselves and we look forward to continuing and developing this relationship”.
Over the past year, intu Potteries volunteers have also worked with Breast Cancer UK, DougieMac, Young Enterprise and Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank.
intu Potteries has worked with DougieMac for over two decades and has developed a very strong relationship. In 2017, intu staff donated £3,291 worth of clothes. intu also supported DougieMac fundraisers by allowing them to collect within the centre, raising a further £7,000 for the hospice.
Alex Jade Ward-Brassington, Fundraising Manager at DougieMac, commented: “We at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice have been privileged to work with intu Potteries throughout 2017. The team have got involved with the hospice in a variety of ways; volunteering at our events, helping our supporters fundraise in the centre, as well as, providing gifts and items to sell in our shops throughout North Staffordshire. It is thanks to organisations such as intu Potteries that we are able to care for patients not only at the hospice in Blurton, but in their homes too, every day of the year.”
In 2018, several members of staff of intu Potteries will work with Age UK Staffordshire and join a Befriending service to help combat the loneliness of older people in Staffordshire. They will regularly meet with an older person either in their own home or in the centre for a coffee and a chat.
