To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, the world's most celebrated dramatist and poet and possibly the greatest influence on the English Language, Waterstones MK is proud to announce a sonnet competition. There are two categories – '11 and under', and '12-16'. Prizes for both categories will be presented on 23rd April 2016.
Sonnets are usually written about love but we are sure the Bard of Avon would allow you some leeway in your choice of subject!
DID YOU KNOW? A sonnet is a 14 line poem with a regular rhyming scheme. The 14 lines are divided into three sections of four lines each and a final couplet. The rhyming scheme can be described as a-b-a-b, c-d-c-d, e-f-e-f, g-g.
WHAT'S YOUR SONNET? We are looking for a poem of 14 lines. You don't have to worry too much about the rhyming scheme – we are more interested in what you have to say. Your poem should be written or typed on A4 paper. Entries must be received by 14th April at 5pm.
On the BACK of your paper, write your NAME, your school, and your SCHOOL'S TELEPHONE NUMBER. Please hand-deliver to Waterstones Midsummer Place in Milton Keynes,
e-mail to email@example.com or post to: Waterstones (Midsummer Place) Unit 72 Midsummer Place Milton Keynes Bucks MK9 3GA Telephone: 01908 395384
The best sonnets will be on display in the centre, intu Milton Keynes, in front of Waterstones Midsummer Place, from 16th-24th April. Winners will be informed by 21st April, and will be announced in store and on Waterstones social media on 23rd April. Local papers and radio will also be informed!
