intu Merry Hill will be championing mental wellbeing and inspiring shoppers to share positive thoughts by installing giant mirrors at the centre, as part of Wellbeing Week (24th-30th June).
The ‘More than a Mirror’ event, which is in partnership with Free Radio and Dudley Mind, will take centre stage this Friday 28th and Saturday 29th June. Shoppers will be encouraged to grab a pen and write messages of positivity on the mirrors to spread smiles across Dudley and create a feel-good atmosphere at the centre.
After the event, the centre will be choosing the most inspirational quotes and a few lucky people will have the chance for theirs to be showcased across the centre.
The event will be launched by Free Radio’s Amelia Lily and marks the start of the centre’s official partnership with Dudley Mind, a local mental health charity that aims to improve the lives and wellbeing of people in Dudley currently living with mental health conditions.
To mark the occasion, Dudley Mind will also be at the centre on both days to offer a listening ear for the local community.
The first message will be provided by poet and author of 5 books James McInerney who appears on the BBC throughout the year working on projects that help highlight issues like mental health to make them less taboo. His poetry has also featured at London train stations and on the London Underground.
Naomi Campbell, community development manager at intu Merry Hill, said: “With estimates showing that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health issue, there is a clear need for local support for these individuals.
“We’re really looking forward to unveiling our mirrors at the centre for Wellbeing Week and officially announcing our charity partnership with Dudley Mind. We want the mirrors to create a visual conversation around mental health and hope that by encouraging shoppers to write positive messages, we can help tackle the stigma around the topic.”
Sandra Vaughan, Chief Executive at Dudley Mind, said: “It’s great to officially announce our charity partnership with intu Merry Hill and the mirror installation is a fantastic way to engage shoppers and introduce them to the crucial work we do in and around Dudley.
“The support we provide day in, day out helps to create practical ways in which people living with mental health conditions can increase their ability to tackle life’s challenges. We are looking forward to working with the centre on other fundraising activities throughout this year.”
