Goldsmiths’ top tips for a valentine's day proposal
Published on 22/01/2019

Ring Size
If you are planning a surprise proposal this Valentine’s Day, knowing your partner’s ring size is a must. The simplest way to find out is to 'borrow' or draw around a ring they already wear. If they don’t wear one on the correct finger choose one worn on the middle finger and go down a size or two for the right fit. If in doubt always choose a larger ring size as it can be easily adjusted without damaging the rings aesthetic. Of course, anyone who is still unsure can always pop down to their local Goldsmiths showroom and speak to one of the team there for further advice.

Shine Bright like a Diamond
When choosing a diamond for your loved one, it’s worth bearing in mind that it is determined by four characteristics which are key when making that all important purchase; cut, colour, clarity and carat.
•         The cut of a diamond determines the size and brilliance of the stone, look for symmetry and the proportion of the stone as the better the cut the more light it can reflect the and sparkle.
•         The colour is a big decision, choosing whether to go for a coloured or a colourless stone can change the whole appearance. The way the colour is determined is through a chart starting at D for the elusive colourless diamond, then moving through the alphabet. It’s worth noting that only 5% of diamonds are D colour and that it is the highest level of colour available on the market. All Goldsmiths D colour diamonds are GIA certified, meaning excellent quality is guaranteed.
•         The clarity of a diamond is graded on a scale of perfection. A flawless diamond has very few, if any, blemishes on the outside which could affect the overall sparkle.
•          A diamond is so special it deserves its own measuring scale which is known as a carat. This determines the weight of the diamond not the size. Just remember that the weight of the diamond does not always determine its beauty.

A Promise Made
For those a little nervous about choosing the perfect ring for their partner, Goldsmiths gives you the option to buy a lower-priced ring from the collection as a stand-in for the real thing. Customers usually keep these as a reminder of their special moment, but then come in store together to pick an engagement ring. This gives both partners the chance to have a say when it comes to selecting the perfect piece of jewellery to symbolise the start of their married life together.
