Halloween is coming, which can only mean one thing: the hunt is on for the best fancy dress costumes, complete with amazing make-up looks.
The good news? If you aren’t a dab hand at DIY make-up – and let’s face it, full-on face art – you can get amazing Halloween looks created at the beauty counters.
Even better, the makeovers are free. OK, some are free, some come at a price, but any money you do spend is redeemable against products. So you can give your make-up bag a refresh at the same time! These are our favourite, spook-tastic counter looks, tried & tested...
We headed to the Smashbox Fitzrovia Studio in London to get this amazing skeleton look created in around 90 minutes.
You can get makeovers at Smashbox counters in Boots stores nationwide – how creative they can be from a Halloween point of view, depends on the make-up artist’s skill-set at your local counter.
At the very least, you can get a moody Halloween lip and a spooky, smokey eye, working up to this creative mastery. No need to book an appointment, just pop in and see what they can do!
Price: Free. Yep, totally free. *squeals*

Boots are launching Emporiums – think beauty spaces in their flagship stores – where you can get makeovers, product demos and gifting advice all in one place.
NYX Cosmetics are hosting Halloween demos at 20 of these Boots Emporiums nationwide between the 21st and 31st October so you can learn how to create this amazing Vampire look yourself.
Plus, some of these NYX counters will be offering makeovers at the events too, so find your nearest Boots Emporium store and check with them to find out more.
A heads up: you can find NYX counters within Boots Emporiums at intu Lakeside, Metrocentre, Trafford Centre and Victoria.
Price: Free! You just need to check with your local Boots when to visit the Emporium, and if they’re offering makeovers.
It will come as no surprise that M.A.C offer some pretty amazing Halloween makeovers. We love this green and yellow Alien Queen look, but they offer a whole bunch of outer space-meets-Halloween looks from Cyborgs to space Vampires. Find a M.A.C counter near you to book an appointment.
Price: This Alien Queen look costs £50 and takes 90 minutes to create, but M.A.C offer cheaper makeovers from £30 and the cost is redeemable against all M.A.C products.
We love this look from professional, luxury make-up brand Illamasqua – they call it the The Wisecrack and it’s the ultimate cruel joker look. The feathered lashes really make it – and of all the looks we tried this seemed like the easiest one to try to recreate at home yourself.
Price: This Wisecrack look costs £40 and takes 30 minutes to create. The booking fee is redeemable against all Illamasqua products.
You can get amazing Halloween makeovers at MAKE UP FOREVER counters, which you can find in selected Debenhams nationwide. They offer ‘Beauty Halloween Make-Up’, which takes 50 minutes, and ‘Special Effect Halloween Make-Up’, which takes 90 minutes. We got this awesome Bambi look created. Genius.
Price: This Bambi look costs £40 (beauty halloween make-up), special effects make-up costs £50. The fee is redeemable against all MAKE UP FOREVER products.
