The Byron burger

Ingredients

Method

  • 4 180g hamburgers (see next tab for ingredients!)
  • 4 buns, halved
  • 100g Byron sauce (see next tab for ingredients!)
  • ¼ iceburg lettuce leaves, finally shredded
  • ½ beef tomato, cut into 5mm thick slices
  • 1 small red onion, peeled and cut into 2mm thick rings
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese, roughly the same size as the hamburgers
  • 8 slices of crispy smoked streaky bacon
  • 4 gherkin spears
  1. Preheat the grill to high.
  2. Cook the hamburgers to your liking following the instructions on page 16–17.
  3. Meanwhile, toast or grill the cut sides of the buns.
  4. Spread the Byron Sauce evenly over the top halves of the buns.
  5. Place the shredded lettuce on the bottom halves of the buns and add a slice of tomato. Place 5 onion rings on top of each tomato.
  6. When the hamburgers are cooked, transfer them to a small roasting tray. Top each one with a slice of Cheddar and 2 slices of bacon. Place under the hot grill on the highest shelf. Watch carefully and remove the tray from under the grill as soon as the cheese has melted. If using a BBQ, follow the instructions for melting cheese on page 16.
  7. Carefully place the hamburgers onto the bottom halves of the buns and bring the 2 halves together.
  8. Serve with a gherkin spear on the side.

Tried & tasted: Blogger Hamburger me

As anyone who's a regular reader of my blog knows, I'm a long time fan of the burgers created by Fred Smith, Byron's Head of Food Development, so couldn’t wait to try out this secret signature recipe. Here’s what I thought of it...

Unlike some other burgers on the market, the ingredients are stupidly simple which is a plus. Bun, beef, bacon, cheese, salad, gherkins and sauce are all you need to recreate the Byron burger. Next time I’ll personalise it with chipotle mayonnaise!

Despite having all the ingredients, my version didn’t taste quite as good as when you eat at Byron. My bacon wasn't punchy enough and the mince was coarser than I wanted, but aside from that it was a pretty decent copy.

Overall it was a winner! The ingredients are easily found in most supermarkets and the step-by-step recipe was pretty straight-forward. Let’s just say I’ll definitely be making these again.
