9 ways to brighten up your Blue Monday

Dubbed as the most depressing day of the year thanks to it’s toxic cocktail of limited cash and no sign of holidays in the foreseeable future, the dreaded Blue Monday has officially arrived *sobs*.

But does it really have to be so bad? We don’t believe so. The trick is to keep yourself busy and it’s a lot easier than it sounds. From watching Frozen 2 at the cinema with family to kicking back with a face mask on at home, here are 9 ways to help add a little bit of colour to this year’s Blue Monday and survive the next couple of months ahead…

Set realistic New Year’s resolutions

Nobody enjoys failing, so start the year right by choosing a handful of small and achievable resolutions to avoid setting yourself up for failure. Small steps are key in smashing that overarching goal but remember, slow progress is still progress, and achieving the little things will prove that you can do it. You got this!

Start the year off with a work out

Yes, it may be a cliché but believe it or not working out is a surefire remedy for lifting up dampened spirits post-holiday season. Endorphins (aka your body’s happy hormones) have been scientifically proven to improve moods and overall mental wellness, plus it also helps you feel less guilty about indulging over the holidays. If the thought of going to the gym seems a little intimidating, booking a class at least once a week is a great way to ease it into your routine. Why not visit Lakeside’s brand new outdoor gym in The Quay for some fresh air and exercise at the same time!

Blast out your favourite playlist

Did you know that listening to your favourite tracks can decrease stress levels, increase positive emotions and leave you feeling more inspired and energetic? Yep! Curate a playlist filled with your favourite tracks, and hit play when you wake up in the morning to feel motivated while getting ready for the day. Warning: a lot of dancing may ensue.

Grab the family and watch a movie

Whether it’s going to watch the Disney hit Frozen 2 (it’s aaamazing by the way) or experiencing the iconic musical Cats in its full CGI glory, you’ll be spoilt for choice due to the volume of great movies that have hit the big screens this year. Check out what’s showing at your local cinema:

Opt for smart led lights

Thanks to the shorter and darker days we experience during winter, one of the reasons why people get affected by SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is the lack of facetime we get from the sun. Luckily, there are loads of smart LED light options available with adjustable mood settings that mimic sunlight to help you combat the symptoms. We’ve got our eye on this portable ambience LED light which you can adjust using your phone.

Visit the arcade

It’s dark out and if you’re going to stay indoors, then you might as well have fun doing it. Namco Funscape arcade is perfect for the whole family to get competitive and have a blast over the dreary months. With more than 150 video and arcade games (both old and new), there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Check out Namco at intu Metrocentre and intu Trafford Centre for more.

Don’t forget to spoil yourself

Treat yourself to at home spa day either by yourself or with your favourite people. Kick back and put on a face mask, unwind while watching that series that you’ve been meaning to catch up on and light up your favourite scented candle to reach ultimate relaxation levels. Glass of bubbly optional.

Bowl a strike

The British weather may be unpredictable, but going bowling for a day is incredibly fun and sociable come rain or shine. It has great health benefits, too! Swinging and throwing help exercise tendons, ligaments and joints in the arms while bowling helps exercise lower muscles in the hips and legs. But the best bit is being able to walk away like a boss when you get a strike. Find a bowling alley near you:

Plan your next adventure

The ultimate mood booster? Planning your next getaway! Nothing beats the feeling of looking forward to a trip away from the cold, dark British weather plus, browsing potential outfits is always a fun remedy – it is called retail therapy for a reason
