A birthday in partial lockdown doesn’t have to be a birthday missed. In fact, it’s a fantastic opportunity to have a virtual birthday party and bring loved ones together, to celebrate and spread some joy! Here are our birthday party ideas for celebrating in style in ways other than a picnic or garden gathering. These ideas are easy to enjoy at home with whoever you live with whether it’s yourself, a partner, housemate or the kids.

Birthday party ideas – the location

First up on any party planning agenda is the location. Zoom makes for a perfect virtual party destination whether you’re turning four or 40! If you’re after a more intimate affair you could also try the Houseparty App which accommodates up to eight people and allows you to play games together whilst in the app. Whatever platform you choose make sure you let people know ahead of the day which you’re going to be using to allow them time to download the app ahead of the party. Why not send out some virtual invitations (to replace a party invite) so your guests have no excuse but to join your virtual party!

For younger ones who are upset about not having their usual big birthday bash, it’s worth telling them that while we must stay safe at home birthdays can still be fun.

For a birthday celebration at home you could set up a tent in the garden or cosy den in the living room to create a special place to spend time together, watch movies, play garden games and eat cake and make memories.

Deciding on the party theme

Just because you can’t be together it doesn’t mean you can’t dress up for the occasion. Whether it’s simply birthday glam or your favourite film star impersonation – a themed party could be the way to go. You could include a dress code, entertainment and food to bring the theme together – plus it’s a sure-fire way to generate excitement and get everyone involved.

To get everyone in the party mood you could even send a party prep pack with props and party essentials! GingerRay has a fabulous collection of party decorations and props for all occasions

Why not use the opportunity to keep them busy and get them involved by creating some DIY decorations such as banners or bunting to use for the birthday celebrations.

The birthday meal

Many restaurants are also still running delivery services so you could simply order in a favourite meal and you could even send a delivery to your friends’ doorsteps too, so you can share the experience together. Or if your favourite restaurant isn’t delivering, why not make one of our fakeaways? Make sure you let everyone know what ingredients they will need beforehand and send them the recipe so you can each cook the meal and enjoy together.

Why not get everyone to set the table and with laptops at the ready you have yourself a virtual birthday dinner party!

During lockdown, online events companies have really upped their game to offer a wide selection of entertainment for any occasion! Why not have an afternoon tea, cookery class, painting and Prosecco party or karaoke.

Make your child’s day with a special guest appearance or some amazing magic from Captain Fantastic, You could even play some party game classics such as Simon says and musical statues, which are super easy to host virtually, just pop on a playlist and get the party grooving. Joke-telling, sharing birthday messages and pictures are also great ways to get children interacting.

It really is the thought that counts. During this challenging time an extra special message or something that makes us smile can really make the world of difference, so why not send a special birthday message or gift via Zazzle. Avoid a trip to the supermarket and order something special online to be delivered to their door. You don’t have to spend much money to give someone a gift they’ll love. Show you care when you can’t be there with one of our intu Gift Cards and give someone you love something they can use to treat themselves once this is all over.

Top tip for birthday gifts for kids
