Hundreds of people gathered on the first floor of intu Derby as their Christmas lights were switched on by Santa and local 7 year old Neo McCartney on Saturday 15th November.
This year, instead of inviting a celebrity to turn the lights on, intu Derby teamed up with the Derby Evening Telegraph and launched a competition to find the city’s local hero, someone who has given back to the community, to turn on their lights and win a VIP experience in the centre worth up to £1000.
7 year old Nitro Neo, a motor cross enthusiast, who has raised over £4000 for local charities and collected more than 250 toys to deliver to the local Children’s hospital, was nominated and chosen as the winner for his selfless efforts.
The festive fun started at 11am and included roller skating Christmas baubles, giant fairies on stilts, live ice sculpture carving, magicians, plus performances by local schools and the theatre on stage, before the lights were switched on at 4pm and thousands of sparkling paper strips showered the crowd. Everyone sang ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ in Santa hats given out to the crowd and shortly afterwards Santa and young Neo led the city parade to turn on the rest of the city's Christmas lights.
