Derby-based loaded doughnuts maker, Project D and Burton-on-Trent’s Solesmith, who design personalised socks that have featured on This Morning and EastEnders, will both be opening their first retail stores in intu Derby this summer.
Design 44, who curate a range of quirky UK and Scandinavian gifts and homeware, will be opening its second shop in Derby as part of the scheme.
Hatch is an initiative that has been launched by Revo – a national organisation that helps retail, property and placemaking to thrive. The campaign offers entrepreneurs and budding business owners the opportunity to set up their own shops in popular retail destinations with rent, service charges and business rates covered for the first six weeks.
intu Derby had originally signed up to support one new retailer but following the high quality and diverse range of applicants, it will now be welcoming three unique brands to the centre. Project D, Solesmith and Design 44 will join a range of big name brands such as All Saints, Zara and Phase Eight and will also be given access to business and marketing support from the British Independent Retailer’s Association, plus a year’s free BIRA membership.
Adam Tamsett, general manager at intu Derby, said: “The face of retail is changing and we’re seeing that customers want more choice between the nation’s favourite retailers and smaller, independent brands.
“intu Derby welcomes more than 22 million shoppers a year and we’re confident that Project D, Design 44 and Solesmith will be a huge hit once they open their doors to the public later this summer.
“Hatch gives local brands the chance to trade in a shopping centre for the first time and for two of the winners it will be their first step into a physical store. The competition gives winners a risk-free way to test customer demand for their products and all the winners will be supported by the intu team to make their stay a successful one.”
Samantha Sen, head of policy and campaigns at Revo, said: “We started Hatch to link budding businesses with established retail owners, such as intu. It was wonderful to see the calibre and diversity of the local businesses that were a part of the campaign.
“We’d like to wish a huge congratulations to Project D, Design 44 and Solesmith. intu Derby will be the perfect incubating space for them to allow them to take their brands to the next level.”
