Opening a shop - Design 44

Take a look at my journey into the intu Derby centre

I was so happy when I found out I had won a shop at intu Derby. It came at the perfect time for my business. I was absolutely over the moon that my hard work paid off!

Design 44 has been established for 6 years now and it is the go to place for design led, handmade gifts and interiors from small brands. I want to bridge the gap between big brands and independent businesses.

The concept is so popular, we even have a waiting list of designers that want space in our store. I have so many more lovely products and designers to showcase.

I was thrilled to win, and I started planning my shop fit out right away (with only 2 months to go I had to get a wriggle on!) I created a mood board of different options for how I want my store to look. After going through lots of different ideas I have decided on light wood throughout the store and abstract shapes with pastel and dark undertones to certain areas.

My dad will be doing most of the carpentry in the new shop with my partner Antony’s help and my creative ideas. I have come up with all of the ideas myself and I have loved being creative in designing this store. I really hope my designers and customers will love this edgy contemporary look.

I have announced the date we will be open, and I have all the designers on board.

I am now finalising my staffing levels and creating flyers to promote all the fantastic ranges we will have in store.

Over the next few weeks I will announce the designers we will have onboard. I’m excited to announce that on Saturdays we will have a different pop up designer in store creating personalised items while you browse.

In the meantime, I would love to share with you our creation of mood boards to decide on the concept of the store and the fabulous flyer design that we have created to promote our opening.
