A message from our CEO, Matthew Roberts.

As we continue to see the impact that coronavirus is having on every aspect of our daily lives, I am providing you with an update on what we at intu are doing.  We continue to focus our efforts on keeping people as safe as possible and to help reduce the rate at which the virus is spreading, whilst minimising disruption as much as we can.

On 10 May Boris Johnson set out a road map to ease the current lockdown when the time is right. We have also been looking at our own approach to supporting the gradual re-opening of non-essential stores, as and when the Government deems it safe to do so.

As such we have a specialist task force drawing on our colleagues experience from across the business who have been working together to create detailed and adaptable plans to support this process. We have looked at every element of what we need to do to run our centres as safely as possible. We have common principles across the business that have guided our decisions and each centre has its own unique plan ready to be enacted when it is safe to do so.

We know that a lot of you will be feeling anxious about going out shopping again.  We are doing everything we can to make that feel less scary and as safe as possible. So, when the time is right, we will be sharing this detail with you so you can see the steps we are taking, and the steps we will need you to take to keep everyone safe.

Our fantastic and dedicated teams continue to do everything they can to support each other, our brands and the communities we are part of during this crisis.

We have seen some amazing acts of kindness from both our teams and our brands, who have been working together to make a difference in their local communities over the past eight weeks.

Our staff at intu Braehead and intu Merry Hill have been donating cleaning materials and PPE to their local hospice and care homes.  intu Derby and intu Trafford Centre have been running virtual walking activities to raise awareness and funds for their local charities. And all our centres have been supporting #clapforcarers with some turning blue to mark the occasion and say thank you to the key workers tirelessly supporting the communities around us.

And working with our brands, our teams have been donating what they can to support the vulnerable during this time, whether that’s clothes to The Passage, a London-based homeless charity, care packs to the frontline NHS workers, or distributing Easter eggs for isolated and vulnerable families.

It is these small acts of kindness that bring people together and remind us of the importance of taking care of ourselves and each other during these challenging times. Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week and never has it been more important for us to be aware of our own mental health and that of those around us. Please take some time to visit mind’s website if you are finding it hard emotionally right now, or are worried about someone close to you.

I would like to end with a thank you, to our amazing teams working hard to support their communities by keeping our centres partially open, to our frontline key workers who are placing themselves at risk every day and to you, our visitors, for your patience.
