intu Chapelfield scooped a top industry award at a prestigious ceremony held on Tuesday 23 June at the five-star Dorchester Hotel in London. The shopping centre’s operations manager, Jo Bates, was triumphant in the Operations Manager of the Year category at the 2015 SCEPTRE Awards. She was presented with a trophy by Daryl Fuller, technical director of category sponsor company ITVET.
Jo joined intu Chapelfield in 2011 as facilities manager and progressed to the role of operations manager in December 2013. She then took on the responsibility for managing the security and car-parking, whilst new permanent managers were recruited and became joint, acting general manager in May 2014.
During this time, Jo has delivered intu’s big picture developments whilst ensuring that intu Chapelfield runs smoothly. Jo looks after the centre’s waste management and recycling processes; supporting Ryan Marshall, environmental services manager, and the team to secure the title of Retail Recycling Champions in the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.
Effective teamwork and motivation are key to ensuring that intu Chapelfield is a great place to visit and work: high on Jo’s agenda she has instigated and managed a series of team engagement initiatives from a football team to regular ‘cake bakes’.
“Winning this award really is special as it’s judged by my peers in the shopping centre industry, who really set high standards,” says Jo Bates. “I love the variety of my role at intu Chapelfield and the fact that I get to work with such an amazing team who are all committed to making sure that our shopping centre is the best that it can be; for our shoppers, retailers and the wider community.”
Shopping Centre magazine editor and head judge, Graham Parker, commented: “When it comes to operations, Jo is clearly able to excel at whatever is thrown her way. From orchestrating team engagement initiatives to achieving her ‘zero-to-waste’ target, from earning nearly £12,000 of rebates through waste supplier management to hugely improving the centre’s car parks and stairs, Jo demonstrated a positive approach to getting the job done. A very worthy winner.”
Gordon McKinnon is operations director of intu Properties plc. “We are extremely proud of Jo and what she has achieved during her time at intu Chapelfield,” he explains. “The operations manager’s primary role is to ensure that all of the shopping centre’s functions work together so that our shoppers enjoy every visit and our retailers can trade in a vibrant, efficient and professional environment. Jo works incredibly well with all her colleagues, helping to make sure that the whole team is working towards the goal of delivering world-class service and ensuring customers have a compelling experience each and every time they visit. Jo’s award is richly deserved and I am delighted for her.”
Organised by Shopping Centre Magazine, the SCEPTRE Awards are among the highlights of the industry calendar and are designed to recognise and reward excellence in a critical sector of the UK & Ireland’s economy.
