Monsoon Malabar Ground Coffee Caddy

      Whittard of Chelsea

One of Indias finest coffees, Monsoon Malabar is also one of the best loved of all our blends. Exceptionally smooth with a sweet, spicy kick, this coffee is unique to the lush Malabar Coast of Karnataka and Kerala, where it has protected status. Exposed for months on end, the Typica varietal Arabica beans are washed to a pale gold by the steamy storms of the monsoon seasonthe secret behind this coffees distinctive taste profile.Monsoon Malabars unique process of exposure was discovered by chance back in the 16th century, as spice ships transported the beans back across the seas to Europe. Stored deep within the hold, the damp, humid conditions caused the beans to swell, neutralising any acidity and producing a deep, heavy sweetnessan immediate hit with Europeans.Today, this coffee is drunk the world over, its beautiful mellow smoothness making it the perfect after dinner drink. Housed in one of our beautiful copper caddies, its an impressive addition to any kitchen shelf.

      Colombia Montebello

      Whittard of Chelsea

Originally introduced by the Jesuits just over 300 years ago, nearly all the coffee grown in Colombia is Arabica of exceptional quality, high grown on small estates and wet processed. After Brazil and Vietnam its the worlds third largest coffee producing country, although it tops the charts for its production of wet-processed Arabica. So, while its not particularly tricky to find a good Colombian coffee, when you discover a really special single origin variety you know youve struck gold. Our limited edition coffee from the Sabanitas farm in the high Andes has unsuual fruitiness particularly surprising given the Medium-Dark roast, which usual cancels out fruit notes in favour of cocoa and smoke. The relatively high roast gives the coffee its velvety smooth body and caramelised sweetness the natural fruity notes combine with the roast to introduce a maple syrup quality. No sip is the same as the last, and the coffee sweetens as the cup cools. The Andean region of Antioquia is home to around 92,000 producing families and theres a fair bit of competition between the smallholdings. The rich volcanic soil around the town of Montebello has proved particularly fertile for coffee growing, and the farms owner, Mr Jesus Antonia Gaviria, has applied three generations worth of coffee-growing expertise to create his small 34 acre farm. The distinct flavour is largely a result of the high altitudes (1850m) which allow the coffee cherries to ripen slowly, and the quality of the soil. However, a strong knowledge of the local growth conditions and a strict process of selection gives Mr Gaviria the advantage. He has chosen to not to protect the plants from the sun; shade cover at this altitude can cause problems with mould, as the taller trees trap the morning moisture. Once picked, the beans are rigorously depulped and washed before being exposed to the sun to dry.Its fair to say weve rarely come across a more nuanced and carefully produced Colombian variety. In a country known for the consistent quality of its coffee, thats saying something

Nowadays chai lattes are enjoyed all over the world, though with its blend of black tea with whole cardamom seeds and pods, dried ginger, cinnamon and clove buds, our Masala Chai is a cut above your average coffee shop cuppa. Afternoon Tea

      Whittard of Chelsea

In the words of the novelist Henry James: 'There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.' But what makes the tradition so distinctly British? It all started when the 7th Duchess of Bedford called for tea in her boudoir one afternoon in the 1840s - feeling a little peckish, she asked that the tea might be accompanied by a light snack. Devotees of afternoon tea ceremony have never looked back, and it wasn't long before we were feasting on scones, cakes and cucumber sandwiches. Do you have a favourite afternoon tea food-pairing? Do tell. Our signature Afternoon Tea is an elegant blend of Chinese black tea, oolong and jasmine-scented green tea, with flavours of bergamot and a flamboyant flourish of pink and white petals. The rich black tea blends beautifully with the refreshing floral taste of the green, while the hint of bergamot creates the lightest suggestion of an Earl Grey. It's an ideal tea for Earls and Duchesses alike. The Great Taste Awards have been described as the Oscars of the food worldso you can imagine we were pretty chuffed when our Afternoon Tea won a gold star at this years awards. The judges called it bright, with a pleasant sweetness.

      Margaret's Hope First Flush Darjeeling

      Whittard of Chelsea

Picture the scene: as the first spring rains spread across the Himalayan foothills, the Darjeeling tea gardens start to turn green in a flush of colour the earliest harvest of the year is referred to as the First Flush and is considered one of the finest teas to be produced worldwide. Grown at a dizzying 4200ft, this years Margarets Hope First Flush was picked between the 19th and 23rd of March. Weve chosen a batch made picked from the original China bushes grown in 3 small plots in the tea garden: Nehore 1 & 2, (named after the tea farmer who planted the bushes) and Lamba Dara (meaning hill top). The estate itself is named after the daughter of the estates founder she visited the estate in the 1920s, but tragically died on the boat back to England. The 2016 First Flush has the fresh, effervescent quality that many compare to champagne and the muscatel fragrance weve come to associate with the estate. However, we were surprised by the new, herby quality which freshens up the typical sweetness our tea farmers put this down to the moss and wild flowers which grow around the high altitude tea bushes, adjusting the mineral balance of the soil (we see the same thing in mineral flavoured teas like Big Red Robe oolong). You might like to compare it to this years First Flush from Badamtam Estate: the Margarets Hope variety is lighter in colour with a delicious briskness to the finish, while the Badamtam is a deep peachy colour with a hint of apricot sweetness. Wed suggest Margarets Hope with cucumber or smoked salmon sandwiches, Badamtam with Bakewell Tart. Our tea taster, Bethan, recently travelled to Darjeeling. Check out her blogto find out more about the picking process, the landscape and why First Flush is a risky business it all depends on the weatherWe've given our Margaret's Hope First Flush Darjeeling the number 865, to mark the founding date of the world-famous estate in 1865.

      English Rose

      Whittard of Chelsea

It was during China's Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) that tea artisans first experimented with buds and blossoms, imbuing the leaves with essential oils. Roses were among the very first flowers they tried and osmanthus, orchids and jasmine also proved popular. We've recreated the taste of a classic 'Meigui Gongfu' rose tea by using a Chinese black tea for the base, imbued with subtle floral flavours and scattered with rose petals. The tea might be authentically Chinese, but those wonderfully aromatic notes of rose are forever England. Deliciously delicate and seductively sweet, a single sip brings to mind rolling hills, church bells and country gardens: perfect for a picnic on the village green.

      Whittard of Chelsea

The blend of rare Latin American and African cocoa means this chocolate bar is pretty intense pitched at a super-strong percentage of 80% with no added cocoa butter, it needs a tea which is complex yet refreshing. Our specialist Nilgiri Kala Moti is surprisingly delicate for a black tea, with a tropical fruit sweetness and a lightly nutty, peppery twist to the finish. Try it with a small square of Grand Cru and see what you think.

      Chelsea Garden

      Whittard of Chelsea

We like to think that Walter Whittard dreamed up this blend while taking a stroll in Chelsea Physic Garden one summer evening.Or perhaps it was during a visit to the Chelsea Flower Show? After all, the event was first held in Chelsea just two years after Walter Whittard set up shop. You'll find the base of our signature White Peony tea allows for a light and elegant brew, while the sweet suggestion of rose and flavours of ripe summer fruits add a delightfully characteristic twist. And the whole rosebuds? Well, allow Walter to express the more floral side to his personality. It's ideal infused in our glass Chelsea Teapot - the rosebuds make for quite the afternoon tea showpiece.

      Earl Grey

      Whittard of Chelsea

Our take on the quintessential British blend of fine Chinese and Ceylon black tea is perfectly balanced with flavours of citrusy bergamot - we've even added a scattering of blue cornflower petals for an elegant final flourish.Renowned for its wonderful bergamot aroma, Earl Grey tea has become firmly ensconced as an afternoon tea classic. The story goes that the iconic blend was specially created for Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, in reward for saving the son of a Chinese mandarin from drowning. When his supplies of the tea had run out, the earl commissioned British tea blenders to recreate the taste. A few decades later, Walter Whittard devised his own signature version which took the tea auctions by storm. Have a taste, and find out what all the fuss was about.

      The Champagne of Teas

      Whittard of Chelsea

Theres a reason Darjeeling is known as the champagne of tea. First, the flavour bubbly and uplifting, with that slight bramble bush muskiness you get in dry champagnes. Then theres skill in the picking and processing. We source from Darjeelings top estates to make sure the teas are of the highest quality. And finally well, the price. Darjeelings are some of the most sought after teas in the world; Second Flush Castleton is particularly popular with the Japanese and our favourite estates for First Flush Darjeelings are Margarets Hope and Badamtam.
