There's Something About Mary/Night at the Museum/Dodgeball

      HMV

Triple bill featuring three Ben Stiller comedies. In 'There's Something About Mary' (1998), in 1985, high school senior Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) gets a date with gorgeous classmate Mary Jenson (Cameron Diaz) after rescuing her mentally handicapped brother, Warren, from a bully. The date is ruined when Ted catches his penis in his fly zip and has to be rushed to hospital. Thirteen years on, Ted is still obsessed with Mary, and hires private detective Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to find her. Healy tracks Mary and Warren to Miami, but falls in love with her himself and tells Ted that she is now an overweight mother of four. Undeterred, Ted makes his own way to Miami, but soon finds that he has plenty of competition for Mary's attentions.'Night at the Museum' (2006) stars Stiller alongside Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, and Dick Van Dyke. Larry Daley (Stiller) is a kind-hearted dreamer who always knew that he was destined for greatness, he just never quite knew how. None of his ideas or inventions has panned out, so with a heavy heart, he takes a regular job as a lowly graveyard-shift security guard at the Museum of Natural History in order to provide a more stable life for himself and his ten-year-old son. His first night on the job, however, he finds that guardianship of the museum is far from stable. At nightfall an Egyptian spell brings the artifacts and wax figures to life. With Attila the Hun charging to war through the hallways, the diorama miniatures embroiled in a deadly feud, and a two-ton Tyrannosaurus Rex nagging to play fetch, Larry turns to a wax replica of President Roosevelt (Williams) for a little advice on keeping things intact. In 'Dodgeball - A True Underdog Story' (2004) Stiller and Vince Vaughn star as rival gym owners who compete against each other in a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament. Sweet, underachieving Peter LaFleur (Vaughn) is the proprietor of Average Joe's, a run-down gym with an oddball clientele. Despite its shabby exterior, the gym catches the eye of competitor White Goodman (Stiller), the power-hungry and aspirational owner of the gleaming, ultra-modern Globo Gym. Staging a takeover of Average Joe's looks to Goodman like a doddle - until the attorney from the foreclosing bank, Kate Veitch (Christine Taylor) is unexpectedly won over by Peter's boyish charms and decides to do all she can to save his gym from Goodman's clutches.

A set of five classic John Wayne films. Wayne stars opposite Sophia Loren in 'Legend of the Lost' (1957), an adventure film set in the Sahara Desert. Wayne plays Joe January, a hard-drinking guide who sets out to discover a lost treasure in North Africa, and along the way falls in love with Dita (Loren). Wayne gained his first starring role in 'The Big Trail' (1930), an early Raoul Walsh talkie, playing the young leader of a pioneer wagon train travelling across the Oregon Trail. Repelling Indian attacks and battling against the hostile elements, The Duke still finds time for romance with a fellow traveller (Marguerite Churchill). In 'The Comancheros' (1961), Wayne stars as Texas Ranger Jake Cutter whose path crosses with that of professional gambler Paul Regret (Stuart Whitman). The two become uneasy bedfellows in their quest to crush a powerful outlaw gang who are selling arms and alcohol to the local Indians. This was director Michael Curtiz's last film and also stars Lee Marvin and Ina Balin. 'North to Alaska' (1960) is a light-hearted Western starring Wayne and Stewart Granger as rough and tumble gold prospectors in Alaska. When Sam McCord (Wayne) and George Pratt (Granger) eventually strike it rich in the gold rush, George sends Sam to Seattle to fetch his fiancee; but Sam falls in love with her. George eventually accepts his loss and sets about finding a new gal, but only seems to find trouble. 'The Undefeated' (1969) is set in the aftermath of the American Civil War. Confederate Colonel James Langdon (Rock Hudson) prepares to travel to Mexico with his family. When they are attacked by bandits, it is Union Colonel J.H. Thomas (Wayne) who comes to their aid. The former enemies find themselves united in their efforts to resist Mexican Emperor Maximillian, and Juarez, the rebel leader. When the rebels kidnap the Southerners, Colonel Thomas must decide whether to surrender his valuable herd of 3,000 horses and secure their release, or leave them to their fate.

      Frost/Nixon

      HMV

Based on Peter Morgan's stage play, Ron Howard directs this dramatised account of the 1977 TV interviews between scandalised former President Richard Nixon and British talk-show host David Frost. Three years after the Watergate scandal that led to his demise, former president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella) sat down with Frost (Michael Sheen) to discuss, for the first and only time, the details of his term in the White House and his spectacular fall from grace. With the famously steely Nixon confident that he could come out tops in the encounter, and Frost's side questioning whether this was a step too far, media commentators prepared themselves for a PR exercise. But when the interviews got underway, observers were astonished when both men abandoned their usual stances, and chose to conduct an open, honest and frank exchange of views, covering all the areas of concern that had previously remained off-limits. In addition to covering the interviews themselves, the film also traces the difficulties that had to be overcome, and egos that had to massaged, before the historic events could finally take place.
