Absolutely Fabulous - Absolutely Everything Box Set [DVD] [1992]

      Amazon

"Absolutely Fabulous was first broadcast in 1992 and became an instant hit. Originally a sketch on the French and Saunders Show, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits which were the height of fashion at the time--honestly, Sweetie. The superb comic performances offered star status to Julia Sawalha as Edina's straight-laced daughter and Jane Horrocks as the sublimely dippy Bubble, and reinvented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of the top female comedians Britain has ever produced. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever.
Ab Fab remains a landmark in TV since it was the first time that female comedians and writers had had the freedom and exposure to satirise problems close to their own heart, from their own perspective. With Feminist writers claiming that the ideals of feminism were dead in the 1990s and that female concerns were moving in the wrong direction--towards the ""Laddette Culture""--and reports claiming that careers were taking a central role, forcing motherhood onto the back-burner, the series sought to embody and satirise these new supposedly ""female"" characteristics. As the show continued to grow in popularity both in Britain and the States, plans were made to transfer the formula to America. However, as with many other great British series, the content was considered too risqué for American audiences due to the amount of sex and drug references. Thus domestic audiences breathed a sigh of relief that their beloved Ab Fab would stay forever British to the core. --Nikki Disney
"

Barbara Currie - The Power of Yoga [DVD]

      Amazon

"Barbara Currie's Power of Yoga makes some powerful claims. Promising you ""the best body shape ever"" Barbara assures the viewer the video will teach you how to ""re-charge and re-energise your entire body in just 10 easy minutes a day"".
The video itself consists of four self-contained sections based on Hatha yoga techniques that can be done individually if you're short on time or all at once for a longer workout. First up is the 10-minute ""tone-up"" which you should aim to do daily. Once you get used to this try and do the second 10-minute ""power workout"" for a more advanced stretch. Section 3 is ""power toning"" which places particular emphasis on arms, bums, tums and thighs. And finally, section 4 brings you ""power stretching"" aimed at relieving tension.
At the start of each exercise Barbara outlines the muscles that each exercise is working and the benefits you will receive--and her glowing good health should be evidence enough for even the most sceptical viewer.
All four sections show versions of each exercise for both the beginner and those with previous experience. But although aimed at all levels, Power of Yoga will be of particular interest to beginners. No previous knowledge is assumed and with the easy-to-follow sequences and strong emphasis on working at your own pace, Barbara's soothing voice will encourage even the most hesitant beginner. --Anna Freeman"

      Middlemarch (Repackaged) [DVD] [1994]

      Amazon

"This BBC adaptation of George Eliot's Middlemarch is so remarkable that after viewing it disaffected English Literature students may find themselves revisiting the once-dreaded novel with pleasurable anticipation. Over the course of six hours, we are immersed in the lives of Dorothea Brooke, Mr Ladislaw, Dr Lydgate and, by the end, you'll be wanting even more. Set in the fictional town of Middlemarch in the early 19th century, the stories of the townsfolk are woven seamlessly together, with strands of political fervour and social commentary subtly incorporated.
Dorothea (Juliet Aubrey) wants desperately to make something of her life; however, as a woman she is forbidden the study of Greek and Latin and no one takes her notions of societal improvement seriously. She chooses to marry the elderly Rev. Casaubon (Patrick Malahide), a scholarly man whom she can aid in his work. Meanwhile, new to Middlemarch is the handsome Dr Lydgate (Douglas Hodge), who has grand notions for running a free hospital and finding a cure for cholera. His plans are sidetracked, however, when the beautiful but materialistic Rosie Vincy (Trevyn McDowell) sets her sights on him. Other sub-plots run throughout, including Rev. Casaubon's dashing but disapproved-of cousin Will Ladislaw (Rufus Sewell), who has his eye on Dorothea; the scandals of banker Mr Bulstrode (Peter Jeffrey); and the prodigal son Fred Vincy (Jonathan Firth), who urgently wants the hand of Mary but can't find the money or an honest career to provide for her.
Each of the actors fully embodies his or her role, and none of the performances are standout because they are all wonderful. The locations are dark and fitting to the mood, and the costumes and set decorations are period perfect. For anyone who enjoys the BBC's adaptations of great novels or for those just looking for a great story to sink their teeth into, Middlemarch will not disappoint. --Jenny Brown, Amazon.com"

"All 12 episodes from the first two series of the BBC drama starring Sarah Lancashire as a police sergeant in a rural West Yorkshire valley. In series 1, Catherine Cawood (Lancashire) receives a visit from Kevin Weatherill (Steve Pemberton), a distressed member of the Yorkshire community she oversees, and is drawn into a ransom case in which the life of Ann Gallagher (Charlie Murphy) is at stake. Doctor Who - Series 5 [DVD]

      Amazon

"Sometimes, change is good, as evidenced by Matt Smith's assumption of the mantle of Britain's beloved science-fiction hero, Doctor Who, in this stellar series. Replacing David Tennant, who was arguably the most popular incarnation of the Time Lord since Tom Baker, was an unenviable task for any actor. But relative newcomer Smith--the youngest performer to play the Doctor--makes the role his own within the first few moments of the series opener, ""The Eleventh Hour,"" which introduces his puckish interpretation, as well as companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan). The pair, whose banter is a terrific mix of screwball humor and light sexual tension, are later joined by Amy's fiancé, Rory (Arthur Darvill), who is not quite whom he appears, as revealed in ""The Pandorica Opens."" Old enemies such as the Daleks (""Victory of the Daleks""), the Silurians (""The Hungry Earth""), and the formidable Weeping Angels (""The Time of the Angels"") test the Eleventh Doctor's mettle, as does the series' central adventure, in which a host of the Doctor's foes, including the Cybermen and the Sontarans, unite to seal him in the fabled Pandorica, an inescapable prison located within Stonehenge. The 13 episodes of Series 5 are thrilling, thoughtful, humorous, and altogether addictive--in short, as good a series of Doctor Who as any that's been produced.
When compared to the archival Doctor Who releases, the six-disc set of the Complete Fifth Series comes up somewhat short in the supplemental feature department, but there are still a number of worthwhile extras to complement the episodes. Chief among these are the six commentary tracks, most of which feature newly minted show runner Steven Moffat (Sherlock), as well as Gillan and Darvill, and run the gamut from giggly, lightweight chats to informative looks at the production process. Less interesting are the video diaries by the three series leads, which are amusing but forgettable fluff, as are the outtakes and Doctor Who Confidential Cut-Downs. The Monster Files provides a look at the series' key villains, including the new designs for the Daleks and the monstrous Alliance, which Moffat reveals as being comprised of whatever costumes were available at the time of shooting (!). A barrage of TV spots and promos, including a US spot, round out the extras. --Paul Gaita"

Call the Midwife Series 1-5 Complete [DVD]

      Amazon

"The first five series of the BBC drama adapted from Jennifer Worth's memoirs about a group of midwives working in poverty-stricken East London in the 1950s and '60s. In the first series, Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) gets her first job at Nonnatus House which she soon realises is a nursing convent and not a hospital, as she had assumed. As she begins caring for patients, she gradually becomes accustomed to her new environment, making friends with fellow midwives Cynthia (Bryony Hannah), Trixie (Helen George) and the clumsy Chummy (Miranda Hart). In the second series, it's 1958, and while Jenny has her hands full dealing with an abused patient, Trixie and Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) are forced to board a Swedish cargo ship to tend to the captain's pregnant daughter. In the third series, set in 1959, the midwives temporarily find themselves without a place to work when an unexploded bomb is found near Nonnatus House. Meanwhile, Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates) attempts to settle in to life at the convent and Chummy arranges for a royal visit to raise awareness of their weekly clinics. In the fourth series, the midwives are joined by new recruit Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie), but she doesn't get off to the best of starts after a night out with Trixie and Patsy (Emerald Fennell). Meanwhile, Barbara has to aid a first-time mother when her birth doesn't go according to plan and Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) struggles with the financial pressures on Nonnatus House. In the fifth series, Trixie continues to enjoy her role as a fitness instructor but Sister Julienne isn't so happy about her new hobby. Meanwhile, Barbara begins a relationship with Vicar Tom Hereward (Jack Ashton) and the nurses and midwives of Nonnatus try to determine why there have been so many cases of babies being born with severe deformities in Poplar. The collection also includes all four Christmas specials."

Doctor Who - Destiny of the Daleks [DVD] [1979]

      Amazon

"A Doctor Who story from the Tom Baker era, Destiny of the Daleks pits the Time Lord against his deadliest enemies once more in an enjoyable adventure, although truthfully it’s far from the finest hour of all concerned.
Originally broadcast at the end of the 1970s, Destiny of the Daleks is notable for introducing a regenerated Romana, but across its four episodes we also find the seemingly-dead Davros with a little more life in him than the Doctor expected. And there’s also the small matter of the Daleks being locked in the midst of a long-running war, with seemingly no way to break the stalemate. In short, plenty for the Doctor to get his teeth into.
Yet while Destiny of the Daleks has plenty of tasty ingredients, you can’t help but share a little disappointment at the way some elements play out. Sure, there’s a lot still to enjoy, but the plot sometimes struggles to justify the running time, and the lack of budget is more obvious than is usual in classic Doctor Who.
But it’s to the credit of Destiny of the Daleks that it rides out its problems and still delivers an enjoyable story. It may not be a favourite of the dedicated fans of the programme, but there’s still plenty here for Doctor Who fans young and old. And you can’t beat the Daleks…! --Jon Foster"

      Enchanted April [DVD]

      Amazon

"This lovely, 1991 adaptation of Elizabeth Von Arnim's novel has a superb cast and a tone so mellow you can feel your pulse get slower. Josie Lawrence and Miranda Richardson play a pair of unhappily married women who rent an Italian villa for a month, sharing the cost with a crusty Englishwoman (Joan Plowright) and a lonely aristocrat (Polly Walker). Sun, rest, sinking into the green grass for long naps--they all have a soulful effect on the quartet, and then on the men in their lives who make a surprise visit. Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) directs with seeming effortlessness, and it is impossible not to be swayed by the promise of restoration for these burdened characters--or for anyone alive. Wonderful performances all around, including a particularly sensitive one by Alfred Molina and a very funny one by Jim Broadbent. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com"
